Thanks for the video Tracy. I followed your instructions to a T and didn't get good results, please help. I spread fill''finish and sanded 400. 600, 800, and 1000. I can't achieve a shiny surface. It looks so dull. What am I doing wrong? Thank you.
Hi Tom, make sure the finish is very hard and dry before trying to buff out, and use a good polishing compound, StewMac sells very good liquid and drill mounted buff pads and good directions as well. better then what I had at the time.

CAUTION!!! - Things aren't always as they seem! Getting the area that has been filled, sanded then polished is NOT going to blend into the surround area & you will see a difference! The area that was sanded is NOT going to have the same sheen/shine as the area that wasn't sanded. I went all the way up to 2000 grit & STILL could get it to look the same!
I have no comment for your fail.. troll some where else. I have 100% success w/ this fix..
@@TracyLongoI'm no troll but I will admit that I was using a different product other then as show in the video so that could very well be part of the problem. BUT STILL... I just don't see how you can sand a finish then get it to look the same as original? Maybe I'm not using the right polishing compound? BTW: I used Meguiar's Ultimate.
@@AncientApparatus its in the sanding process you want to end up with 800-1200 grit or higher before buffing.. I think I used a pedestal buffer. and stick compounds? from Jescar. stopped using liquid compounds 30 years ago..
@@TracyLongo Again it's probably my fault the repair I did didn't come out as well as your because I'm an idiot who doesn't follow directions. But to my defence though you weren't exactly very clear about the polishing phase & never mentioned using a pedestal buffer with stick compounds but instead your shown using a handheld drill in the video. Just out of curiosity do you have any experience with Starbond & is it as good as MasterGlu? I was using their, Starbond Thick, formula followed with their quick dry spray.
@@AncientApparatus My bad, I haven't watched this vid in years, I did use the drill mount foam buffers you can buy anywhere guitar tools are sold. as fas as Starbond , I cant use it.. I did for 10 years.. not even close in shelf live or quality compared to Gluboost .
Thanks for this. I have a small ding/chip in my 12 string near the darker area of the Burst. Where it almost goes black. Is it necessary to polish the ding before applying the master glue or fill and finish or will I be able just fill and and polish back to gloss ?
I would not polish first, the finish needs something to adhere to, so like you said apply the finish and then polish it after its dry. Good luck !!

Thanks for that Tracy, I'm just an old amateur, but I'v just finished a repair, the ( top finish was chipped out-2 inches) so I filled it with Normal Viscosity ca.glue but didn't use a Glue Boost ( silly me😢) then Had to wait a day or two ( winter over here) till it Hard 'n' dry then scraped off the mound then leveled off with 1200 grit w/d and all done, thanks 4 video

@@paulcrawford1108 My 44 years of doing repair, we called junk guitars "Piece of shit guitars". more work then value to make them playable. sentimental guitars? much different. This guitar has been in my shop for years.. not playable.. so I use it for Videos.

Nice video, thanks! Could you also do this with poly+hardener(+maybe little thinner) or do you have to do this with superglue? Asking because I "accidentally" started with sanding the headstock right after I rounded off the tuning peg holes and the poly was not dry enough (left it only 24h to dry), and when I was sanding it with 600, I peeled of a small triangle right on the edge of the peg hole, dow to the primer. Now there is still a small part on the edge of the "wound" that is loose and I am wondering if to use superglue or poly+hardener to fix this? I already sanded it lightly and applied fresh colour to the wound. I know superglue is much faster, but does it hold on the long run? I am hoping that this is the last layer before the final upper layer that I will polish ... right after I fix this :) ... properly.
Sure any style finish will work. My attempt here was to show the fastest way to do a crack/finish repair on a "cheap guitar".
Hey I did this on an old yamaha and noticed after polishing that I have these sort of puddle-looking spots in the finish around the crack repairs. Any idea what causes this and how to fix it?
Its best to do small layers if you have the time. but , dips can be filled use a toothpick and make sure the puddle lines are wax free. a tiny paintbrush works best.. but hard to find. but you can find dental micro brushes online.. I have been using them for 10 years.. CA wont melt them..

Yes, if too much wood isn't gone.. It really works well for Sound hole wear and cracks.

I have had success with all finishes except oil finishes. tru oil etc..

@@judgemental5159 Not really, this is a CA glue like superglue, but is a bit flexible to work with the wood contracting and moving over time.
Do you use the same technique with the common crack below the bridge? Do you first sand down the lifted poly from the initial crack?
I would answer no. Why? the repair I did had to do with crushed, smashed wood. but a crack below the bridge, needs to be aligned, clamps, cleats, or rare earth magnets.. anything to get it level.

Thanks so much for posting! I wonder, is there a particular rubbing compound you use when buffing?
I used a stewmac pedestal buffer w/ fine compound bar, but you can use the rotary buffs that they sell for drills and they work well w/ the liquid compound's they sell.

+Stan Broadway I'm guessing it looks like cloudy ares? thats unfortunately humidity that got trapped under the polyester finish, not a great fix yet out there..sorry.
